Entering the mullah's presence, Kasim Firdusi felt a psychic tug-of-war. Firdusi was a born rebel, an important and useful trait in a terrorist. Yet here he was, offering fealty to this withered old man.

"What news on these...'scholars?' " To the old man, the only true learning was to be found in the Koran. Other disciplines, from rocket science to nuclear physics, were the realm of false scholars. This was especially so with anyone expressing interest in the pagan ruins of the past.

"Wise one, we have kept watch on these archaeologists since they arrived." The mullah's believers offered many trickles of information to the movement. Government workers in the Institute of Antiquities had quickly given warning of the arrival of Daniel Jackson.

"And what do the minions of the Great Satan seek?" the mullah demanded.

"It has not been easy to infiltrate their camp," Firdusi admitted. "The foreigners brought their own workers—these people of Abydos. They speak their own language, and it had been hard to get information. But the local people, who expected work from the foreigners, are all the more willing to tell us whatever they hear. The Americans seek a lost inscription. They seem to be searching for some other place."

The mullah nodded. "You have done well enough, Kasim Firdusi. Continue to keep your eye on these foreigners, and prepare your band. Whatever these unbelievers reach for"—he extended a clawlike hand, and clenched the fingers—"we will seize."
